Srinagar is quite a big city. It is situated on the bank of Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus. There are two lakes at Srinagar, Dal and Anchar. The city is famous for Kashmiri Handicraft. It is also well known for its natural beauty and house boats. The place is also called Paradise of Earth. The word Srinagar has been derived from Sankrit name Surya – nagar meaning city of the sun.

The climate in Srinagar has always been pleasant, this is the reason why tourists visit the visit all year round. But, the best time to visit Srinagar is April to October as during this time the whole valley is covered by blossoms and the real beauty of the city can be seen.

Gulmarg – Places to visit in Srinagar

It is surrounded by snow capped mountains, green meadows and evergreen forested hills and valleys. It stoods at the altitude of 2730 meters. Gulmarg is famous for skiing. Tourists visit the place to look at the wonderful view of people skking on the snow loaded slopes of Gulmarg valley. 

The cable car is also running there, which is second highest cable car in the world.

Dal Lake – Places to visit in Srinagar

It is called Lake of Flower. It is also called Jewel on the Crown of Kashmir. The scenic beauty of the lake can be witnessed from the Mughal Gardens such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh which was built by Jahagir, the Mughal emporer. During winter season, the temperature reaches upto -11 degree celceus which freezes the lake. The lake covers an area of 18 square kilometers. The garden around the lake blossom with lot of flowers in the month of July and August. 

Presently, the Government of India has started the renovation of the garden and lake area by investing Rs 11 billion to restore the lake to its original beauty.

The other lakes are – Wular Lake, Manastal Lake.

Apple Orchid – Places to visit in Srinagar

While in Srinagar, one should not miss to visit Apple Orchid. It is estimated that 80 percent of the apple that are supplied to the rest of the country as well as Nepal and Bangladesh are from Srinagar.

When one visit the area, it seems like a scene from a movie – the ground carpeted with green trees that dotted with shiny apples. Some of the apple orchids are Mirgund Apple Orchids, Wani Apple Orchids etc.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Gardens – Places to visit in Srinagar

It was established in 2006-2007 which has become a key attraction to the tourists. It has covered the area of 29.6 acres. It is the largest tulip garden across the continent of Asia. There are about 20 lakhs flowers in the garden which include 7 varieties of tulips.

Blossoming tulips lend immense scenic beauty to the garden. Tulip festival is organised every year during March – April. During flower festival, several cultural programs and exibition of locals handicraft is also organised.

Sona Marg – Places to visit in Srinagar

It is a famous tourists spot. Here trekking is done by ponnies. It can also be done by helicopters. Sona Marg was a Gateway on the ancient silk road which connects Kashmir with China.

In winter, Sona Marg is fully covered by snow which is used to be call white gold. Sona Marg is treated as the gem hidden in the high passes of Kashmir and is free from hustle and bustle of city life.

At Sona Marg, one can look at Thajiwas Glacier which seems to be heaven on earth. Here tourists enjoy ice skiing and also ride ice scooter to enjoy the magestic snow covered and scenic beauty. There is Zojila Pass which is treated as important link between Kashmir and Ladakh. The pass was once captured by Pakistan but later it was recaptured by the Indian forces. So, it is worth to be seen.

Hazratbal Shrine – Places to visit in Srinagar

The Hazratbal Shrine has been given a great respect and high regards as it contains a relic, the moi-e-muqqadas as a muslim of Kashmir believed to be Mohammad’s hair. Meaning of the Hazratbal is the place of great respect. It is the holiest shrine of Kashmir.

The shrine is situated at the bank of Dal Lake.

Shankharacharya Mandir – Places to visit in Srinagar

The temple is on the top of the Shankharacharya Hill. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located at a height of 1000 feet above the valley. From here, the full view of Srinagar can be seen.

The temple has been worshipped since 200 BC but the present structure dates to the 9th century. It is also regarded as sacred by the Buddhist.

You could also reach Srinagar from New Delhi by taking the train from New Delhi. The train travels to Jammu and from Jammu you can reach Srinagar by taking the State Transport Bus.
